AFN Special Interest Groups (SIG)
All SIG positions are volunteer positions filled by AFN members in good standing. These positions require a time commitment of 4-6 hours per month. If you are interested in joining a SIG, please click on the "Contact Chair" button under the corresponding SIG listed below.

ADULT TRAUMA
Special Interest Group
The Adult Trauma SIG supports forensic nurses providing care to adult survivors of various forms of trauma, including strangulation, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, etc. This group is dedicated to promoting the provision of evidence-based care to adult trauma survivors.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
Special Interest Group
The Behavioral Health SIG supports forensic nurses working in mental/behavioral health and substance abuse treatment. This group addresses issues related to mental/behavioral health and substance abuse and develops resources to facilitate the provision of evidence-based mental health care.


CAMPUS SEXUAL ASSAULT
Special Interest Group
The Campus Sexual Assault SIG supports the professionals involved in the investigation of alleged incidences of sexual assault occurring on college and university campuses and/or incidents of sexual assault involving students enrolled in colleges and universities. This SIG is committed to facilitating a high-quality, evidence-based approach to the provision of care and services to sexual assault victims on college and university campuses.
CHILD MALTREATMENT
Special Interest Group
The Child Maltreatment SIG promotes the provision of evidence-based care to pediatric victims of maltreatment. This SIG is focused on providing education and tools to other healthcare professionals and those involved in the investigation of child maltreatment to aide in its prevention, identification, documentation, and treatment.


COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS
Special Interest Group
Corrections nursing is the practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care within the unique and distinct environment of the criminal justice system. The Community Corrections SIG supports the commitment of the corrections nurse to protect, promote, and optimize the health and abilities of the incarcerated patients entrusted to their care.

DEATH INVESTIGATION
Special Interest Group
The Death Investigation SIG supports forensic nurse examiners in the application of their knowledge, training, experience, and expertise to investigate causes and manner of death. This SIG is dedicated to the application of evidence-based principles of medico-legal death investigation.

ELDER ABUSE
Special Interest Group
The Elder Abuse SIG is dedicated to bringing awareness to the incidence of maltreatment and neglect of elderly adults. This SIG is focused on providing education and tools to other healthcare professionals and those involved in the investigation of elder abuse to aide in its prevention, identification, documentation, and treatment.

The Death Investigation SIG supports forensic nurse examiners in the application of their knowledge, training, experience, and expertise to investigate causes and manner of death. This SIG is dedicated to the application of evidence-based principles of medico-legal death investigation.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Special Interest Group
Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labor, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker and/or others. The Human Trafficking SIG is dedicated to ensuring the prompt identification, evidence-based treatment, and proper healing of victims of human trafficking. Providing nurses and others who may encounter these victims with the tools necessary to timely identify and properly treat them is the main goal of this SIG.


MASS DISASTER
Special Interest Group
The Mass Disaster SIG is dedicated to supporting forensic nurses and other professionals who respond in the aftermath of a major, manmade or natural disaster in which so many individuals are injured that local emergency medical services are overwhelmed and/or destroyed.
