Informing Interprofessional Practices Through Virtual Learning

Join your AFN Colleagues at Virtual Boot Camp this March!

 

Forensic Nurses with expertise providing care for patient populations affected by various forms of interpersonal violence and crime are in a unique position to provide consulting services to attorneys litigating both criminal and civil cases.  

The sessions in this Virtual Boot Camp Series will review the significance of providing evidence-based responses to those impacted by crime, violence and abuse and the need for accurate forensic documentation.  In addition, the final session will review how forensic nurses can leverage their knowledge, skills and critical thinking aptitudes to deliver ethical testimony in criminal and civil proceedings.


This Web Series will launch on March 17, 2021 and features three interactive web sessions through March 31, 2021 (see dates and session descriptions below).  Unable to attend one of the live sessions?  Registrants will be able to access recorded sessions at their convenience through April 30, 2021.

CONFERENCE SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

Upon completion of this program, learners will possess basic knowledge and skills to:

  • Use of forensic nursing expertise in a consulting role.

  • The importance of forensic documentation and impact on criminal proceedings.

  • Expectations of the forensic nurse expert.

CONFERENCE SESSION OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this program, learners will possess basic knowledge and skills to:

  • Discuss the roles & responsibilities of the forensic nurse expert who may consult in criminal and civil proceedings.

  • Identify the skill set & competencies that the forensic nurse can apply in case consultation.

  • Discuss how complete and accurate forensic charting facilitates collaboration between nursing, medical, and the law. 

  • Discuss the elements of testimony and effectiveness of that testimony.

  • Critique evidence-based references to support forensic nursing practice.

No refunds on Web Series registration.  Registrants who are unable to attend may gift his/her purchase to an individual qualifying for the same registration rate. Module 1: Criminal Case Consulting

Join the presenters as they review roles, responsibilities and approaches of the forensic nurse consultant in criminal and/or civil forensic focused cases.  Educational opportunities, tools & resources for the forensic nurse consultant will be discussed.

Wednesday, March 24, 2021

Module 2: Defensible Documentation

This session will review the needed accuracy in forensic nursing documentation, photo-documentation, injury description, adherence to standards, common errors & impact on criminal and civil proceedings.

Session III

Wednesday, March 31, 2021

90 Minutes

Module 3:  Ethical Expert Testimony

The final session will include a critique of the expectations of the expert witness, professional presentation of the forensic nurse and a review of the ethical elements of expert testimony.

DR. JENNIFER JOHNSON

DNP, MSN, APRN, WHNP-BC, AFN-BC, SANE-A, SANE-P, DF-AFN

Dr. Jennifer Johnson is a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner, board-certified advanced forensic nurse, and sexual assault nurse examiner with more than 20 years’ experience in practice.

 

She currently works as an assistant manager of a comprehensive forensics program in the Midwest and is the president and owner of Johnson Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC.  Dr. Johnson earned her doctorate of nursing practice from Maryville University in St. Louis and her master of science in nursing from the University of Missouri/Kansas City.  Dr. Johnson is an appointed member of a number of professional and governmental organizations related to forensic medicine, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology/National Institute for Justice Evidence Management Project, and is the President Elect and a Co-Founder of the Academy of Forensic Nursing.

VALERIE SIEVERS

MSN, RN, CNS, SANE-A, SANE-P, DF-AFN

Val Sievers is a Forensic Clinical Nurse Specialist with more than 35 years of health care experience as a registered nurse, advanced practice nurse, educator and consultant with extensive practice experience in the arenas of emergency and critical care nursing, academic education and forensic clinical practice. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Val provides advanced education to healthcare and interdisciplinary professionals regarding the care and treatment of patients affected by violence and abuse to include; evidentiary examinations for adult, adolescent and child survivors of sexual and physical abuse.
 

She is currently dual board certified as an adult-adolescent and pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner. In addition, Val has provided consultation to hospitals, health care agencies, non-profit organizations, communities and military installations regarding collaborative strategies for developing or improving a response to those affected by violence.  Val is the owner of MedLaw Consultants, LLC, a forensic healthcare consulting practice and is a current Board member & Co-Founder of the Academy of Forensic Nursing.
