The reality is healthcare professionals (e.g., nurses, physicians, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and nurse practitioners) are not academically prepared to interact with personnel from the medicolegal death investigation system (MDIS), whether it’s a medical examiner, coroner, or justice of the peace system. Additionally, this topic may be included in orientation at the workplace, but it is often encountered in the middle of a complex and busy work environment, and the team is scrambling to remember a policy that might be available. The first encounter is typically when a hospitalized patient dies, and the circumstances of the patient and death are required to be reported to the MDIS. In other cases, the patient has died outside of the hospital, and the MDIS contacts the patient’s primary care provider for information about the patient’s medical history. In either of these cases, the MDIS will ask for general and unique information about the patient, not to find errors or place blame, but to add to the overall investigation to determine an accurate cause and manner of death. Unless one knows this, it can be a very stressful event. Academic Death Nurse strives to help healthcare professionals gain knowledge, skills, and understanding about the information needed and why. Ideally, this information will add value to the healthcare system by helping create standardized reporting tools and efficiencies for anyone engaging with the MDIS. Bridging the communication gap between the healthcare system and MDIS will only strengthen the timely and accurate reporting and investigation and determination of cause and manner of death.
