The Effects of Compounded Trauma Exposure on the Emotional Well-Being and Retention of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners

Walden University

Posted: June 30, 2026

You are invited to complete a 15-minute anonymous survey for a study titled: The Effects of Compounded Trauma Exposure on the Emotional Well-being and Retention of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) and those who work in a dual role while also working in the emergency department provide care to their patients during some of the most traumatic moments in their lives. Although this work can be deeply meaningful, repeated trauma exposure may influence nurses’ professional quality of life and their decision to remain in these essential roles.

This study seeks to understand the relationships among secondary traumatic stress, burnout, compassion satisfaction, and intention to leave among emergency department nurses and dual role nurses. Findings may help identify opportunities to better support trauma-exposed nurses, strengthen workforce retention, and inform future research and organizational practices.

Seeking volunteers that meet these requirements:

  • Work in the emergency department

  • Work as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) while also working in the emergency department

  • Minimum of one year in your role

  • Practicing registered nurse in the United States

The survey will be open until the end of July 2026. Questions should be directed to Alyssa.Neitzert@Waldenu.edu
