Vicarious Occupational Trauma Exposure

Harvard University

Posted: July 8, 2025

Help us protect forensic nurses from vicarious trauma! Complete a survey to help validate the Vicarious Occupational Trauma Exposure (VOTE) Index. This tool is designed to identify where in your work environment vicarious trauma comes from – not just how it impacts you. This will help healthcare organizations and policy makers find ways to change your work environment and protect forensic nurses like you. Survey participants will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. The survey will take about 20 minutes.

Want to know a bit more?

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the University of Minnesota School of Nursing is conducting a research study to develop a new tool that would identify and measure how workers, like addiction treatment providers, are exposed to vicarious trauma. Vicarious trauma is the “second hand” trauma that is transmitted to workers who interact with people who experienced trauma “firsthand.” Better understanding the sources of vicarious trauma will allow organizations to better protect critical workers. The tool was recently developed with substance use disorder workforce. We are now validating it for use with forensic nurses because we know how closely you work with trauma survivors. This tool has been informed by interviews of providers, existing scientific literature, and with review from experts in trauma, substance use treatment, and worker health. This study is funded by the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIH-NIDA).

We are recruiting forensic nurses from across the United States to take this survey which will allow us to test how reliable and valid the tool is for your workforce. We would love your help as part of this process.

Thank you for your time and effort.

Your time and energy is precious. As a thank you, all participants will receive a $10 gift card.
