I am needing to write a protocol for STD testing that I do for the children I see at our CAC. I was wondering if anyone had a protocol that I could look at and possibly use as a template for my own protocol. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I understand some programs only perform GC urine screens. However, it is with some discussion that testing for all STI(as in adults) should be considered. The research has shown that many times kids do not disclose everything. As well, with the neurobiology of trauma, they may not recall all events of the assault. I do know of someone presently doing this particular research - if all testing should indeed be considered in pediatrics regardless if it's acute or non-acute. I have had some with only a Positive rectal (or pharyngeal) STI finding, yet the urine screen was negative. So I personal feel a GC urine only is not sufficient. At our CAC we do all screening if the child/adolescent will allow. If not, specifically blood studies, we advise the parent that the next time the patient needs some testing performed at their pcp's office, perhaps they could have them done at the same time. And of course, your pediatric medical director may have some standards in place.
