Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Dear AFN Members:

2022 was a year of growth and engagement for our members and community partners. Our successes include:

  • ANCC Accreditation and rollout of nine modules/bootcamps on our Learning Management System.

  • The hiring of Academy staff to support Membership, Marketing, and LMS / CE development.

  • The continuation of our bi-weekly webinar offerings in forensic topics of interest and professional growth. In 2022, the Academy provided 28 webinars.

  • Extensive collaboration with Senator Lisa Murkowski that started in 2020 has led to the federal authorization of the Ensuring Forensic Care for All Victims Act.

  • Academy of Forensic Nursing and Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH) hosted the inaugural Nurses Summit to Combat and Prevent Forced Organ Harvesting November 1, 2022, drawing 45,000 attendees world-wide.

Here's what the Academy has in store for you in 2023:

  • The highly anticipated launch of our professional journal: the Journal of the Academy of Forensic Nursing (JAFN).

  • All webinars will offer continuing education certificates (CEU) provided upon completion of the webinar or through the LMS.

  • Members will continue to receive free bi-monthly live webinars, and non-members will also have the opportunity to view these events.

  • Regional Conference in Texas – March 30 & 31, 2023

  • Regional Conference in Alaska – May 16 & 17, 2023

  • Regional Conference in Indiana – July 20 & 21, 2023

  • And more to follow...

Due to a family emergency, President Elect Deb Holbrook petitioned the AFN Board of Directors for an extension of the AFN presidency to be continued by Dr. Jennifer Johnson for the 2023–2024 term. The BOD voted on the petition submitted, without the presence of Holbrook and Johnson, to extend the presidency under the supervision of Past President Cathy Rossi. Holbrook will assume the AFN presidency January 1, 2024, and Dr. Jennifer Johnson will transition to immediate past president.

Your Academy Executive and General Board are committed to our mission of linking research to practice through the dissemination of scholarship, education, and service. We listen to our members and commit to serving them as we respond to trauma with care.

Looking ahead, we are excited by what we see! We look forward to hearing from you as we dedicate our efforts to you, our members, in support of the continued comprehensive, compassionate care you provide for your patients every day.

We are in this together, and wish you a healthy and prosperous 2023.

Respectfully,

Dr. Jennifer Johnson, President

Deb Holbrook, President Elect
