Patty Metzler

Patty Metzler recently retired after more than 47 years at Carle Hospital in Urbana, IL. Her career included neuro/neuro ICU, pediatric neurology, and more than 45 years in the emergency department. She co-created the EMS manual for Carle's ambulance service and assisted in the designation of Carle's Level 1 Trauma Center. Besides emergency nursing, she developed and ran six safety, education, and community programs. She developed and ran one of the first SANE programs in Illinois from 1999–2016. She was the first SANE to be deemed an expert witness in court. She assisted in the creation of the Illinois SANE Education Manual and sat on the Commission that revised and updated the IAFN SANE certification exams, serving on the commission for about ten years. She still assists with SANE training both classroom and clinical settings. She participated as a nurse in medical missions for cleft lip and palate repair in the Phillipines, Mexico, Central America, and Venezuela. She's a church pianist for two churches and has directed children/adult church choirs. She's an avid gardener, kayaker, reader, and volunteer. Although she sold her motorcycle a few years ago, she misses it.
